    Role Summary:

    This role oversees day-to-day compliance matters and provides Related Management executives with strategic insight, guidance and risk awareness associated with regulatory program obligations, program changes, and trends. The individual will have the subject matter knowledge, personal relationships in the industry, and business skills necessary to be able to assess business risks i.e. “smell smoke” as well as to advise on mitigation methods.

    The role may involve Fair Housing Officer responsibilities, as RMC has a national residential building portfolio that is affected by Federal, State and local Fair Housing statutes and regulations.

    This role will report directly to the General Counsel or President with dotted line interface with and residential development executives.

    Core Responsibilities: 

    Industry and Risk Awareness:

    • Stay abreast of all changes in all laws applicable to the real estate industry including but not limited to fair housing, affordable housing, rent regulation, OSHA and other laws, and their interpretations.
    • Notify applicable owner and property management executives by asset class, location or regulatory program of changes in statutory or regulatory guidance that impacts our operating property processes or re-development programs.
    • Focus should be on supporting our reputational risk management efforts, maximizing rent role opportunities within affordable program limitations and minimizing the potential costs associated with the expected naturally occurring errors associated with managing dozens of programs across hundreds of locations with thousands of employees.


    • Provide Related’s training team with requirements for singular or upfront training requirements for sites and corporate employees associated with mitigating identified compliance risk factors.
    • Partner with our operations teams and training group in assuring that our front-line staff and their managers have up-to-date, comprehensive, training resources to support their operations in the areas above and others as they are identified.  
    • Review training department reports to assure all required training is being taken as scheduled and notify officers timely if not the case.

    Operating assets:

    • Receive, process responses, track and communicate status of all complaints received from Government Agencies relating to RMC or the sites under its management of any kind.
    • Acting as or assisting RMC’s Fair Housing Officer, provide guidance for all RMC executives on an as needed basis to interpret complex fair housing requests, provide alternative solutions, and assure appropriate, timely responses.
    • Acting as or assisting RMC’s Fair Housing Officer, oversee the review of Section 504 and Fair Housing site logs and assure that no one other than the Fair Housing Officer or the asset owner as applicable is denying accommodations or modifications, and that responses to residents are provided timely.
    • Acting as or assisting RMC’s Fair Housing Officer, review and sign off on website verbiage and photos/graphics/pictures for Fair Housing compliance (applies to condominiums and Related Rentals market rate units as well as all affordable portfolios).


    Newly acquired or developed assets:

    • Review and sign off on affirmative fair housing marketing plans and tenant selection plans developed by RMC regional staff for affordable housing assets whether acquisitions or for new construction sites, whether as standalone or part of a mixed income development (does not apply to condominiums or Related Rentals market rate units).
    • Review proposed regulatory agreements as submitted by development and acquisition teams and provide comments timely.
    • Advise owner executives of program layering or other compliance risks associated with proposed executions including potential impacts of pending legislation, regulation or case law.


    Other Matters:

    • Serve as resource for RMC for all day-to-day corporate matters.
    • The successful candidate will hone skills that will ensure the ability to step up and manage individual projects while exhibiting both an enthusiasm for team effort and inspirational leadership qualities.

    • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel;
    • Section 8/236/LIHTC/Bond/HOME program compliance experience a plus;
    • Smart, hard-working and willing to learn and master new information;
    • Energized by diverse and dynamic working environment;
    • Juris Doctor Degree preferred (with at least 7 years compliance management experience) and Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent.
